The British Charitable Society

Welcome to the British Charitable Society, one of the oldest foundations in the United States.

Founded in 1816 its original purpose was stated as being for:

‘the relief of poor and destitute Britons, affording aid and consolation in their afflictions; and to provide useful information to British immigrants arriving here’.

In  nearly 200 years that mission has barely changed, yet the Society these days finds itself providing aid to a more diverse group of Britons with a wider range of pressing financial problems. Their one common link is that they must reside in one of the six New England States and be either a British subject or the child of one. We are Brits helping Brits .

If you are seeking help from the Society, please visit the section on Who We Assist for more information .

As the efforts of the Society become more widespread the drain on funds becomes more evident. This has given rise to the need to organize social events as fundraisers. The unexpected by-product of these has been the provision of a much appreciated  social focus for a number of British people in the New England area. Unlike many other immigrant nationalities there is no strong British core. In recent years the organization of these social events has proved immensely popular in bringing ‘Brits’ and their friends together, with the emphasis on ‘Brits helping Brits’. Please visit our Events Section for more information on upcoming events and see photos of recent get - togethers.

The membership of the Society is widespread and increasingly active. Whilst the majority of the members reside in the New England area, a good percentage can be found throughout the United States and in Europe. Lifetime membership costs only $45, which means that members need never remember or forget to renew and always stay in touch. If you would like to join us, please visit  the Membership page for details.

Please take a few moments to browse through the pages of our website and get an idea of the type of organization we are. If you are seeking help you will find out how to go about it. If you need to connect with fellow Brits, we can cover that too!
